DuraFlex produces two liner alloys that matter for damper matching: the 316Ti stainless (higher corrosion resistance, common on oil and wood-burning installs) and the 304 stainless (standard for gas and some wood applications). The damper assembly must match the liner diameter exactly, not approximately. Common sizes we see in Tacoma are 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch round; oval conversions for older masonry flues require a different mounting bracket.

Identification starts at the top of the chimney. DuraFlex labels the liner collar with a stamped alloy mark and nominal diameter. If the collar tag is weathered, we measure the liner ID with a caliper, not a tape measure, because a 6-inch liner can read 5.875 inches cold and still be within spec. The critical compatibility gotcha: DuraFlex throat dampers built before 2014 used a narrower pivot pin spacing (2.375 inches center-to-center) than current production (2.625 inches). Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke back-puffing on startup. The damper plate warps from repeated heat cycling and no longer seals against the frame. On DuraFlex systems, this usually shows first at the hinge side where the 316Ti liner radiates heat unevenly against the cast frame.
• Damper won’t open fully or hangs at half-mast. The linkage corrodes where the operator rod passes through the smoke shelf. Tacoma’s marine air accelerates this; we see it most in homes within a mile of Commencement Bay where salt load in the flue is higher.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. A homeowner can verify the damper model from the collar stamp, check that the operator handle moves freely, and confirm the plate isn’t visibly detached. What you cannot safely do: work above the smoke shelf without proper ladder positioning and fall protection, or attempt to remove a seized damper frame embedded in refractory cement. The refractory is brittle; a wrong pry angle cracks the smoke shelf and turns a $400 damper job into a $2,000 masonry repair.
