HeatShield chimney cap installation in Tacoma typically runs $340-$680 for most single-flue setups, including the cap, collar, sealant, and labor. Most owners discover the problem after a windstorm blows through the North End or when water starts dripping into the firebox during our wet February-March stretch.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield caps aren’t universal. The brand produces two main lines that show up in Tacoma: the standard stainless single-flue caps (model prefix HS-SF, typically 8″-13″ round or 9″×13″ to 13″×18″ rectangular) and the multi-flue “cage” style caps used on larger homes in the Proctor District and Stadium area, where multiple fireplaces share a single chimney structure. The critical compatibility point is the collar depth. HeatShield caps use a 5.5″ standard collar on single-flue units, but some 2018-2021 production runs shipped with a 4.75″ short collar that doesn’t seat properly on flue tiles extending more than 4″ above the crown. Check the stamped model number on the underside of your existing cap, or measure from the cap base to the bottom of the collar.

For most Tacoma installations, the aftermarket specs match. The exception is multi-flue custom widths. HeatShield’s cage caps are fabricated to order for anything over 18″×18″, and a generic replacement won’t anchor correctly to the crown flashing.
Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the flue tile or crown. HeatShield caps use 304 stainless, but the collar seam is spot-welded and the weld zone is where salt air from Commencement Bay starts eating first. We see this most on homes west of Pearl Street. The rust isn’t cosmetic. It’s telling you the seal has failed and water is tracking under the cap.
- Cap sits crooked or rocks when touched. The mounting brackets on HeatShield single-flue caps are tension-fit against the flue tile. After 5-7 years of thermal cycling, the stainless loses its spring and the brackets no longer bite. A loose cap is a cap that will leave your roof in the next south wind.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. This means the cap-to-flue seal has failed, or the cap has lifted enough to let wind-driven rain enter. In Tacoma’s climate, this accelerates liner deterioration. The moisture mixes with creosote deposits and produces acidic runoff that etches terra cotta flue tiles.
- Animals or debris in the flue. A properly seated HeatShield cap has 5/8″ mesh screening that blocks birds and squirrels. If you’re hearing scratching or finding twigs, either the mesh has corroded through at the weld points or the cap has shifted enough to create a gap.
- Visible gaps between cap and flue tile, or missing mounting hardware. The HeatShield system uses two stainless bands with hex bolts. Bolts back out from vibration. Gaps as small as 3/16″ let in enough water to damage the smoke chamber over a single winter.

What drives the range: cap size, whether the existing mounting bands have seized and require cutting, and crown condition. If the crown is cracked or sloped wrong, the new cap won’t seal regardless of quality. We photograph the crown before quoting. Checking your cap is safe enough. Binoculars from the ground, or a careful look from a secured ladder if you’re comfortable at height. Note the model stamp, measure your flue tile dimensions, and check for the symptoms above.
Installing a chimney cap is where it gets risky. You’re working at roofline height, often on a slope, with a part that needs to seat square and torque down evenly. A cap that cants 1/8″ off level will pool water and fail in two years instead of fifteen. Sometimes, if the issue is only loose mounting hardware. We can re-torque bands and reseal the collar for a fraction of replacement cost.
