Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

The throat dampers are stamped with a model prefix, usually “HS-TD” followed by a width measurement in inches. Top-sealing units carry a “HS-TS” stamp on the housing.

The critical compatibility gotcha: HeatShield throat dampers built before 2016 used a 5/16-inch pivot pin. Current production uses 3/8-inch. Drop the wrong pin size into an older frame and you’ll wallow out the bushing in one season. We measure on-site with a caliper, not a visual guess, and we carry both pin sizes plus bushing sleeves to salvage frames that are otherwise sound.

Signs Your HeatShield Damper Repair Is Failing

• The damper plate won’t stay open or closed. The pivot pin has worn oval or the frame bracket has cracked. In Tacoma’s marine climate, galvanized pins corrode faster than inland specs predict. We see this most on homes within two miles of the water.
• You feel a cold draft even with the damper “shut.” The plate has warped from heat cycling or the frame has settled out of square. A dollar-bill test, slipped around the closed plate, will catch gaps the eye misses.
• Rust flakes or grit fall into the firebox when you operate the handle. The cast iron is spalling. Once pitting reaches 1/16-inch depth, the plate will never seat clean again. We document this with the camera and show you the measurement.
