Famco Chimney Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Our camera-scan inspection and documented photo record are included as standard under Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, running continuously since 2009.

This page is for Tacoma homeowners who own a Famco chimney cap, damper, or venting component and need repair work on the chimney structure it connects to. We are not affiliated with or authorized by Famco. We are an independent Famco service provider with hands-on experience across the product lines that were distributed in the Pacific Northwest from the early 2000s through the mid-2010s.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Famco chimney caps (galvanized and stainless series) - fastener corrosion and lid separation. The galvanized caps sold through regional distributors in the 2005-2012 period used zinc-coated screws that degrade faster in Tacoma’s marine air than inland installers expect. We see the lid lift or detach entirely, usually after one heavy wind season in neighborhoods like North Slope or the waterfront districts. Our fix: remove the compromised cap, evaluate the flue tile condition underneath, and install a replacement with marine-grade stainless fasteners and a proper storm collar. We document the flue mouth with the camera before capping.
  • Famco top-sealing dampers - cable fray and frame rust. The cable-operated top dampers, particularly the earlier cast-aluminum frame models, develop cable wear where it passes through the throat. In Tacoma’s wet winters, the frame seat rusts even when the damper appears to close. We find this during Level 2 inspection when smoke spillage tests fail despite the damper looking shut. Our fix: replace the cable assembly or, if the frame seat is pitted, recommend a stainless replacement damper with a silicone seal. We test draft before and after with a digital manometer.
  • Famco wall thimbles in direct-vent installations - gasket hardening and sidewall moisture. The B-vent and direct-vent thimbles used with Famco termination caps often show gasket compression set after 10-15 years. Tacoma’s temperature swings, mild as they are, cycle the metal enough to crack the seal. Moisture stains on interior drywall near the thimble are the tell. Our fix: pull the thimble, inspect the vent pipe condition, replace with a fresh thimble and high-temp sealant rated for the appliance class. We photo-document the wall cavity condition.
  • Famco chimney pots and decorative terminals - spalling and base separation. The terracotta and cast-concrete chimney pots distributed under the Famco name in the Northwest develop spalling, flaking surface layers, when the crown wash beneath them fails. Rain gets behind the pot, freezes at the base, and pushes it off plumb. We see this on Proctor District craftsman homes where the original crown was tarred over instead of properly rebuilt. Our fix: remove the pot, rebuild or recast the crown with proper slope and drip edge, then reseat the pot with a bedding of refractory mortar.
  • Famco stainless chimney liner collars - crevice corrosion at the weld. The 304-grade collars used on some Famco flex liner termination kits show pitting at the circumferential weld in coastal Tacoma conditions, especially where salt air reaches the roofline. This is not a manufacturing defect; 304 is simply under-specified for sustained marine exposure. Our fix: replace with 316Ti or higher-grade collar, or transition to a DuraFlex or Olympia Chimney termination component with equivalent fit and better corrosion resistance. We match the collar to the existing liner diameter and document the connection with photos.

Our Famco Chimney Repair Process

Our Famco Chimney Repair Process
  1. 1
Schedule and scope confirmation. You call (253) 447-5982, a live person answers, and we book a Level 2 inspection. We confirm the Famco component type and age if you know it, so our tech arrives with the right collar sizes and fastener specs on the truck.
  2. 2
Camera-scan inspection and findings review. Our technician runs the camera down the flue, checks the crown, cap, damper, and exterior masonry, and records the footage. You watch the screen in real time. We identify whether the Famco component is the failure point or a symptom of a larger condition.
  3. 3
Written price and scope delivered. Before any repair begins, you receive a written price, written scope of work, and written warranty under Haven Standard Clause 1. If the job involves an OEM Famco part versus a quality aftermarket equivalent, we explain the trade-off and let you decide. No work starts without your signature.
  4. 4
Repair execution with assigned technician. The same tech who inspected does the repair. Background-checked, uniformed, with license information available on request. You get a text when they’re on the way.
  5. 5
Post-repair testing and documentation. We run draft tests, verify damper operation, and photo-document the completed work. The photo record uploads to your job file under Haven Standard Clause 4. You get a copy before we leave.
  6. 6
365-Day Done Right Promise activation. If anything in the scope fails or performs below standard within one year, we return and make it right. The promise is stamped on every job, not offered as an afterthought.
