Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Tacoma Owner’s Guide

We install Famco chimney caps across Tacoma for $285-$520 installed, depending on flue size, cap style, and whether your crown needs repair before mounting. Most Famco replacements we book are done in a single visit because we stock the common 8″×13″, 13″×13″, and 13″×17″ galvanized and stainless models on our trucks. If you’re seeing rust streaks down your masonry or hearing animals in the flue, the cap has likely failed and needs replacement before the next heavy rain.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco manufactures several cap lines, and the right match depends on what’s on your chimney now. The most common we see in Tacoma are the Famco Single-Flue Chimney Cap (screw-mounted to the flue tile), the Multi-Flue Cap (bolted to the crown itself), and the Outside Mount Cap (wraps the crown edge for older chimneys with deteriorated tile).

To identify yours, look for the stamped Famco label on the cap skirt or mesh screen. If the label’s rusted off, measure the flue tile opening (not the crown) - single-flue caps are sized to the flue, multi-flue to the crown footprint. The critical gotcha: Famco single-flue caps for 8″×8″ flues won’t seat on 8″×12″ tile even if the catalog numbers look close. We check this with a tape measure on every job, because ordering the “almost right” cap means a second trip and more weather exposure for your flue.

We source Famco caps through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, and other suppliers. For most Tacoma homes, the Famco stainless steel 304 model outlasts the galvanized equivalent by 8-12 years in our wet climate, and the price difference is usually $60-$90. We’re independent - not affiliated with Famco - so we recommend what the inspection shows, not what a manufacturer prefers.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing
  • Rust stains running down the brick or siding. Famco galvanized caps begin losing their zinc coating after 5-7 years in Tacoma’s marine air. Once rust starts, the metal thins quickly and the cap loses structural integrity.
  • Mesh screen detached or sagging. The spark arrestor mesh is welded to the cap frame at the factory. Salt air accelerates corrosion at these weld points, and a detached screen can’t keep embers or animals out.
  • Cap sitting crooked or loose on the flue. Wind gusts off Commencement Bay and the Narrows work mounting screws loose over time. A tilted cap channels water into the flue instead of away from it.
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. This means the cap is either missing, improperly sized, or the crown beneath it has cracked. The cap is your first defense; water past it means the defense has failed.
  • Birds, squirrels, or raccoons entering the flue. Famco caps with damaged or missing mesh can’t exclude wildlife. In North Tacoma’s older neighborhoods, we see this most often after winter storms bend the screen.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Component Tacoma Price Range
Famco single-flue cap (galvanized), installed $285-$350
Famco single-flue cap (stainless 304), installed $345-$420
Famco multi-flue cap, installed $395-$520
Crown repair/preparation (if needed) $180-$340 additional

The range depends on three things: cap material and size, whether we need to repair or level the crown first, and how many flues the cap must cover. Every quote is written before work starts - Haven Standard Clause 1 - with the cap model, labor scope, and warranty spelled out. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation. We also include a camera scan of the flue and photo record of the completed work, Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, so you have documentation of what we found and what we did.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: confirm the cap is actually Famco (look for the stamp), note whether it’s single-flue or multi-flue, and measure your flue opening with a tape measure. Take a photo of the cap from the ground if you can - we can often identify the model from a clear image.

Where DIY goes wrong: working at roof height on a chimney is genuinely dangerous, and most residential roofs in Tacoma’s Proctor District or North End weren’t designed for safe foot traffic. Beyond the fall risk, an improperly seated cap creates a worse problem than no cap at all - it traps moisture against the flue tile and accelerates deterioration. The mounting hardware for Famco caps is specific to the model series; using generic screws from a hardware store usually means the cap loosens within a season.

We carry Famco caps on our trucks, and Corrine Halstead assigns a named, background-checked technician to every job. You’ll get a text when they’re en route. Call (253) 447-5982 and we’ll confirm fitment from your photos or schedule a look.
