Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield has produced chimney crowns under several series names over the years. The most common we see in Tacoma are the CC-series poured concrete crowns (CC-100 through CC-400, differentiated by flue opening count and overall dimensions), the pre-formed PC-series, and the older RC-line reinforced crowns that were popular in the 2005-2015 window.

To identify yours: check the underside of the crown overhang for a stamped model number, or measure the full width and the flue opening center-to-center if there are multiple flues. The CC-series typically runs 32 to 48 inches wide; the PC pre-forms are narrower, usually 28 to 36 inches. Bring those numbers when you call and we’ll confirm compatibility before we dispatch.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks running from the flue edge to the crown perimeter. These form when the crown expands and contracts at a different rate than the flue tile beneath it. In Tacoma’s marine climate, thermal cycling is milder than the Midwest but wetter - water gets in, freezes at 32 degrees, and widens the crack a little more each winter.
• Water pooling on the crown surface instead of shedding to the drip edge. A proper Copperfield crown has a minimum 3/16-inch per foot slope built in. When that slope settles or erodes, water sits. Sitting water finds the cracks. We see this most often on crowns installed without adequate steel reinforcement.
• Spalling - the surface concrete is flaking off in thin sheets. This means moisture has saturated the pour and is pushing from inside during freeze cycles. Once spalling starts, the protective layer is compromised and the steel underneath begins rusting.
• Stains on the chimney brick below the crown, or on the ceiling near the fireplace. Water is getting past the crown and running down the flue exterior, inside the chase. In older Tacoma homes with balloon framing, that water can travel horizontally before it shows.
• The crown has separated from the flue tile, leaving a visible gap. This is often the final stage. The gap allows direct water entry into the flue system, accelerates liner deterioration, and in gas installations can affect draft performance. We catch this on camera during a Level 2 inspection.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where it goes wrong.

What you can check from the ground: binoculars for crack patterns, a moisture meter on interior chimney walls if you own one, and whether your downspouts are dumping water against the chimney base (a common contributor we see in Tacoma’s hillside neighborhoods). Document what you see with photos - dated photos help us assess urgency when you call.

Where DIY fails: crown repair mortar is not standard concrete mix. The thermal expansion coefficient has to match the existing pour, the bond surface needs proper prep, and the slope must be reestablished or water will pool on your repair. Working at chimney height on a pitched roof is genuinely dangerous - falls from roof edges account for a significant share of home maintenance injuries. We don’t recommend it.
