Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield dampers fall into three families you’re likely to find around Tacoma. The 600 Series is the throat damper with the stamped-steel frame and cast-iron plate, usually 30″, 36″, or 42″ throat opening. The 800 Series uses a heavier cast frame and stainless pivot hardware, built for deeper fireboxes common in 1920s-1940s craftsman homes in the Proctor District and Stadium area. There’s also the universal retrofit line, designed to mount inside the flue tile above the smoke chamber when the original throat damper is too corroded to rebuild.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Copperfield changed the pivot pin diameter on the 600 Series after 2017. A pre-2017 plate won’t seat correctly on a post-2017 frame, and the difference is 3/16″ versus 1/4″ - not something you eyeball from the hearth. We measure with a caliper before ordering. The OEM part ships with the full frame assembly, but we also source quality aftermarket equivalents through our Haven buying network that match the spec at a lower parts cost. For the 800 Series, we almost always go OEM; the cast frame tolerances are tighter and the aftermarket savings aren’t worth the fit risk.

To identify yours: look for the stamped model number on the frame’s right-hand side, visible with a flashlight when the plate is fully open. If it’s rusted over, we can pull the plate during inspection and read it clean.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

• Cold downdraft even when “closed.” The plate warps or the frame rusts at the seal edge, leaving a gap that lets outside air pour in. In Tacoma’s wet winters, that gap also pulls moisture into the flue, accelerating liner deterioration.
• Smoke smell hours after the fire dies. A damper that won’t fully seal lets warm household air escape up the flue, creating negative pressure that reverses and pulls stale smoke odor back down.
• Handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage between the handle and pivot pin has either corroded through or the pin itself has seized in the frame bracket. We see this most on 600 Series units that sat open all summer.
• Grinding or scraping when operating. The plate is dragging on a warped frame or debris has fallen into the throat. This stresses the handle mechanism and will eventually snap the linkage.
• Visible rust flakes in the firebox. The damper frame is shedding oxidation. In coastal Tacoma neighborhoods like Ruston and along Commencement Bay, salt air accelerates this; the frame can look intact from below while the upper surface is paper-thin.

What you can safely check: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up, and look for the model stamp. Note whether the plate sits flat or rocks in the frame. Check the handle for slop - more than 1/4″ of play before the plate moves means linkage wear. These observations help us bring the right part on the first trip.

Where DIY goes wrong: the damper frame is suspended in the throat, above the firebox, and the bolts are often rust-welded to the lintel. Extracting a seized bolt without dropping debris into the flue takes a magnetic retrieval tool and a camera to confirm nothing fell. More critically, a replacement plate that doesn’t seat perfectly creates a gap you won’t see from below - but the draft gauge and the camera will find it immediately.
