DuraFlex Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Tacoma Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible damper repair kits for most DuraFlex 316Ti and 304 alloy liner systems, with typical installed prices running $340-$620 in the Tacoma market depending on flue diameter and access. Most DuraFlex damper jobs we book are completed same visit because we carry the common throat and top-mount damper assemblies on our trucks. Tacoma homeowners usually discover the failure when smoke rolls back into the living room on the first cold evening, or when the damper plate drops open and won’t seat against smoke stains that weren’t there last season.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces two liner alloys that matter for damper matching: the 316Ti stainless (higher corrosion resistance, common on oil and wood-burning installs) and the 304 stainless (standard for gas and some wood applications). The damper assembly must match the liner diameter exactly, not approximately. Common sizes we see in Tacoma are 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch round; oval conversions for older masonry flues require a different mounting bracket.

Identification starts at the top of the chimney. DuraFlex labels the liner collar with a stamped alloy mark and nominal diameter. If the collar tag is weathered, we measure the liner ID with a caliper, not a tape measure, because a 6-inch liner can read 5.875 inches cold and still be within spec. The critical compatibility gotcha: DuraFlex throat dampers built before 2014 used a narrower pivot pin spacing (2.375 inches center-to-center) than current production (2.625 inches). Installing a current damper on pre-2014 hardware leaves the plate cocked and leaking.

We source OEM DuraFlex damper assemblies through our Haven buying network, along with quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney where the OEM lead time runs long. For most Tacoma jobs, the OEM part ships in 2-3 business days; we keep the 6-inch and 7-inch throat dampers in stock for same-day replacement.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
  • Smoke back-puffing on startup. The damper plate warps from repeated heat cycling and no longer seals against the frame. On DuraFlex systems, this usually shows first at the hinge side where the 316Ti liner radiates heat unevenly against the cast frame.
  • Damper won’t open fully or hangs at half-mast. The linkage corrodes where the operator rod passes through the smoke shelf. Tacoma’s marine air accelerates this; we see it most in homes within a mile of Commencement Bay where salt load in the flue is higher.
  • Rattling or clanking when the wind blows. The damper plate has detached from its pivot pins. This happens when the retaining clips fatigue, often after 8-12 years of Pacific Northwest heating seasons with their wide temperature swings.
  • Water stains on the firebox floor after rain. The damper frame gasket has compressed or the plate sits crooked, letting roof runoff bypass the cap and run down the flue. DuraFlex top-sealing dampers are especially prone if the silicone seal hardens.
  • Strong downdraft odor even when the fireplace is cold. The damper leaks enough to equalize pressure between flue and room, pulling creosote smell down through gaps too small to see from below. A camera inspection shows the actual gap pattern.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range (Tacoma)
DuraFlex OEM throat damper (6″-8″) $180-$290
Mounting hardware & gasket kit $45-$75
Labor: remove old, install new, test draft $115-$255
Total installed $340-$620

The range depends on three things: liner diameter (larger costs more), whether we need to remove and reset the DuraFlex termination cap to access the damper (adds 30-45 minutes), and if the smoke shelf masonry needs repair where the old damper frame was anchored. We deliver a written price before any work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. Every damper replacement includes a post-install camera scan to verify plate travel and seal, documented with photos you keep, under Clause 4 of the Haven Standard. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; the OEM damper carries DuraFlex’s own 10-year warranty against material defect.

There’s a safe middle ground. A homeowner can verify the damper model from the collar stamp, check that the operator handle moves freely, and confirm the plate isn’t visibly detached. What you cannot safely do: work above the smoke shelf without proper ladder positioning and fall protection, or attempt to remove a seized damper frame embedded in refractory cement. The refractory is brittle; a wrong pry angle cracks the smoke shelf and turns a $400 damper job into a $2,000 masonry repair.

More importantly, a misaligned damper on a DuraFlex liner can contact the flexible wall and abrade through it over a season or two. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we. Call (253) 447-5982 and we’ll scope it, price it in writing, and handle the install if you choose to move forward.
