• The handle spins freely or grinds. The worm gear or rack inside the throat frame has stripped, usually from years of forcing a rust-seized plate. There’s a safe middle ground. You can verify the handle type, measure the firebox opening, and shine a flashlight up to spot obvious rust or a cracked plate. What you cannot safely do is work inside the flue throat without proper ventilation and fall protection, or tension a top-sealing damper cable with the spring loaded. The spring in a top-sealing assembly can snap with enough force to lacerate a hand, and a throat damper frame shifted wrong can drop debris into your eyes.
