Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco has produced several damper lines over the decades, and the part you need depends on the era and the firebox opening. The cast-iron Gelco throat dampers from the 1980s and 1990s, common in North Tacoma and Proctor District homes, carry a 13-inch by 13-inch or 16-inch by 16-inch plate with a distinctive offset handle boss. Newer Gelco top-sealing dampers, often retrofitted in the 2000s, use a cable-driven stainless frame that mounts at the flue tile.

To identify yours: look for the stamped “GELCO” on the handle bracket or the circular tag on the frame rail. If the tag is gone, measure the throat opening width, depth, and the handle throw distance. OEM Gelco parts are still manufactured for most series, though some 1990s cast frames are now serviced with matched aftermarket equivalents from our Haven buying network. Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has corroded through or the cast boss has cracked. In Tacoma’s marine climate, this usually happens after 15-20 years of salt-air exposure, especially in homes west of Pearl Street where the prevailing wind carries Puget Sound moisture.
• The plate is stuck open or stuck closed. Creosote has bonded the plate to the frame, or rust has swollen the edges past clearance. We see this most often in fireplaces that burn wet Douglas fir, which produces tacky Class II creosote that hardens to a glue-like consistency.
• You feel a cold downdraft when the fireplace isn’t in use. The plate isn’t seating flush against the frame, either from warping or from debris accumulation on the seat. A dollar bill test, closed in the damper and pulled, will slip through easily if the seal has failed.
• Rust particles or flakes in the firebox. The cast iron is spalling, and the plate thickness is degrading. Once you can flake material off with a fingernail, the plate has lost structural integrity and won’t hold a reliable seal under heat cycling.
• The cable won’t retract or hangs slack (top-sealing models). The stainless cable has frayed at the termination point, or the spring cassette has lost tension. Gelco top-sealing cables run through a narrow flue space; friction wear at the elbow joint is the typical failure mode after 10-12 years.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify the symptoms yourself: flashlight the throat, check for rust flakes, note whether the handle has play in the linkage. That’s useful information, and it costs nothing.

What we don’t recommend: disassembling a cast-iron throat damper or adjusting cable tension on a top-sealing unit. The plate is heavy, the smoke chamber is a confined space, and a dropped component can crack the flue liner or damage the smoke shelf. For top-sealing models, the spring cassette is under tension; releasing it without a frame jig can snap the cable or distort the mounting geometry. We’ve been called to correct DIY attempts where the owner got the part seated but misaligned the frame by 3/16 inch, which created a permanent gap.
